During the early 1980's, Miami-Dade County was besieged by a crime wave which demanded immediate attention. Local officials, the Greater Miami Crime Commission, and law enforcement were searching for a solution.
Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade County was created in September 1981. The Greater Miami Crime Commission received seed money from the Southland Corporation. A Board of Directors was created to administer the program, Channel 4-WTVJ became the Crime Stopper television station and the program was born.
In 2015, Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys merged with Crime Stoppers of Miami-Dade County and our service area expanded from Key West at the southernmost point to the Miami-Dade /Broward County line at the north end.
Our organization currently serves well over 40 law enforcement agencies and a population of almost 2.9 million residents and visitors.
